Well, hope all of you had a great week and looking forward to the first weekend of summer!
First of all, let me tell you that two of the greatest groups of the 70’s-80’s were in town and, of course, had to go see and hear The Doobie Brothers and the fabulous, Chicago! Awesome show! If you have a chance to see them and just reminisce of those “Sunny days in the Park…” do it! You can thank me later!
Ok, to the topic on hand… I refer to that recording by Sister Sledge in 1979 (“We Are Family”) where they sang about having the family together. This song was used by the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team as their motivational song, uniting them with their fan as they won the World Series that year!
I have been thinking of the same thing…how about getting the family together…a family reunion?
It seems that my family is strewn all over the place and if it were not for Facebook, we wouldn’t know anything about anybody! Close relatives living in Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, California, Connecticut, Puerto Rico and even Thailand! There are some of these that we haven’t seen since the “usual” reunion place, someone else’s funeral! Not a time for fun or catching up on things!
My mom is 91 and the last of her generation, I am sure she would love to see her nieces and nephews again and possibly meet their kids as well! I hope they would like to see their aunt, as well.
My daughter, D. married into a very close knit family that has a family reunion every year at the same location, here in Texas. It’s true that it’s a bit easier for them since the majority live in Texas but, nevertheless, for a few days they get together and “catch up” on things while having a great time on the beach. Printing up tee shirts and doing all fun things with the youngsters and with the older ones and finally with the “mature” members. I admire that!
So, when was the last that you got together with ALL of your family? Brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews that live outside of your area code that you haven’t seen in a while? Maybe a new addition to the family you haven’t met yet? How great would it be to see them together again or maybe for the first time?
Being originally from Puerto Rico, the last family reunion that my family had was held on the island about 7-8 yrs ago. That was a blast! Even though the majority of the cousins could not make it, we remembered them over a Rum and Coke or two (more like one too many!). Unfortunately, a couple of the attendees have passed away since then but, we did take advantage of the time we spent together.
So, what do you say? Will you be the one to start the ball rolling and get in touch with other family members to set up the date and location? Will there be a special occasion to celebrate giving you that special reason to get together? Grandma’s / Great grandma’s 92nd birthday? A 50th anniversary? Hey! Just for the heck of it?
Well, guess what? That’s what I am going to do! I’ll give them a year’s head start to save up the cash and once we decide when and where it will be, we’ll assign tasks to everyone who commits. Sounds like a plan!
I’ll do it, will you? Is it time for a family get-together one more time? Think about it!
Have a great week and see you back here soon at “The Over 50 Corner!”
