As Martha and the Vandellas once sang…” Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the street!” Or, as Porgy (of Porgy and Bess) sang, ” Summertime, and the living is easy…” Ok, forget that! It’s summer and some of us consider it the time of the year to go on vacation but, where do we go?
As I am now retired, those still on-the-job tell me, “everyday is a vacation day for you!”. Well, no…every day is a “not-going-to-work day”, not vacation! Of course, it means that I do what I want to do, when I want to do it and HOW I want to do it…(unless Maggie tells me different!)
According to the dictionary, vacation is defined as,” an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in travelling.”
Ok, now that we know that us retirees are not always on vacation, when we take a vacation, where to we go?
No! Please do not bring up, visiting family! That is not vacation! That is self-inflicted torture! If M and I travel to any destination where family resides and we want to be on vacation, those family members will never know we are there!
“Come to our house and stay with us…” is what we hear. NO!, is what they hear! We’ll make time for you and visit. Yeah, right, don’t wait up for us!
Living in Texas gives us the opportunity to take to the road and visit any and all “historic” towns the state has to offer, especially those with local watering holes and wineries. Go to a bed and breakfast or motel in the countryside and relax after seeing the sights. There are quite a few of these towns within 4 hours drive time from our house so, we just have to pick a route and are sure to hit 2 or 3 along the way. This is not really a vacation but, an easy 2 or 3 day “get-away”.
Where would we go on an extended vacation? Somehow the beach and warm water seems to be our calling. Laying in the sand or sitting poolside with a cold beverage in hand, even if it comes with a piece of fruit or that paper umbrella, is the way to go! I mentioned warm water! That leaves out California or anywhere on the east coast of the U.S. Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico and the rest of the Caribbean islands would be tops on our list. We would consider Florida’s west coast or panhandle as a good alternate.
M. is allergic to the cold weather so, anywhere that the temperature goes below 80 is off the board. So, you will never find us standing in Times Square on New Year’s Eve or sledding somewhere in Colorado. Sledding not skiing!
So, where will YOU go on vacation? There’s still a lot of warm weather left this year! If you are a winter vacationer, you still have plenty of time to plan your get-away!
Wherever you go or whenever you go, take time to relax and enjoy your time! You deserve it!
Take care and see you next time at “The Over 50 Corner”.
